Week 5
November 24, 2001 - Nepal
"Raw"

1) NEPALJUNG – Team members Doris Strader and Corinne Wilkinson check out their surroundings at the Nepaljung Airport. Nepaljung is less then ten miles from the border to India.


2) WORKSITE – Team members and skilled workers walk around the foundation of the house we are building. We will build a house out of brick (eetah), mud (mahto), and rock (dunga).


3) WORKSITE – Team member Nicole Greenwood talks to team leader Dan Wright during a break at the work site.


4) SURKHET – A mustard plant blows in the breeze in the Surkhet Valley. The area we are in is surrounded by mountains and fields of mustard.


5) SURKHET – Nicole Greenwood and Linda Gremillion are surrounded by a sea of smiling kids welcoming them to the work site.


6) SURKHET – Nigel Faulkner checks on the Thanksgiving chicken he is cooking in an outdoor woodstove while Doris helps.


7) SURKHET – Our cooks Anita and Maya help themselves to a traditional American Thanksgiving meal.


8) SURKHET – Team members gather in Linda’s room after dinner to laugh and play a rousing games of "Pass the Pig."


9) SURKHET – Area villagers and school kids walk along the main dirt road in Surkhet. Smoke from the area stoves creates the haze.


10) SURKHET – Ruins from the nearby Kankhre Bihar Temple. It literally means "The Center of Hindu and Buddhist Religion." Scholars think that the Surkhet region was where Hinduism and Buddhism were first introduced to Nepal. The temple is why the area is named Surkhet, "The Center of God." (Ruins.jpg)


11) SURKHET – Local villagers harvest rice in the fields that fill the valley.


12) SURKHET – A local school kid walks to class in the morning.


13) SURKHET – Me sharing time with two kids of our morning greeting crew.


14) WORKSITE – Corinne and I dance one of the local folk dances after a day of work at the site. The dance called Bahsht requires us to spin around at first, then drop to a squatting position and bounce around like frog jumping around. It’s a lot of fun, but hard on the knees.


15) WORKSITE – Team members Doug Haas and Nigel Faulkner share a laugh on Thanksgiving Day. We took the day of to tour the area and see the sites.
